Our annual Chili Cook-Off is a day where Long Islanders can enjoy the most diverse, delicious, and creative meat and vegan chili dishes from local food establishments, area businesses, and local talent. Prizes will be given in several categories including a “People’s Choice” award.

And it's more than just a day to enjoy chili. It's a fun-filled afternoon with one-of-a-kind vendors, food, beverages, and children’s games. Then, at 3:30pm, we start our much-anticipated annual Halloween costume contest for kids under 10 years of age.

All proceeds benefit people impacted by mental illness including at-risk and homeless Veterans.

Sweet Bee's Honey Festival & Artisan Market will "celebrate the bee" with tastings & sales of local, regional and international honeys, as well as baked goods, chocolates, artisan foods, craft beverages (wines, meads, beers, spirits, ciders, sodas, teas and coffees) and handmade items from more than 80 vendors.

Admission to the Honey Festival includes admission to all Cradle of Aviation Museum air & space exhibits, along with showings of the acclaimed giant screen movie "Backyard Wilderness" in the JetBlue Airways Planetarium, live music, educational seminars, chef demonstrations, craft activities for children, a scavenger hunt and face painting.

A honeybee-themed costume contest will award prizes for best-dressed and most creative costumes, as well as the best bee t-shirt.

Participating organizations include the Cradle of Aviation Museum, Long Island Children's Museum, Friends of the Hempstead Plains, Girl Scouts of Nassau County, Old Westbury Gardens, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Long Island Beekeepers Club and the Harry Chapin Food Bank of Long Island Cares.

When the autumn leaves start to turn, and the crisp fall air is here, Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and it's time for Garvies Point Museum's NATIVE AMERICAN FEAST. This celebration of northeastern Native American culture has been held the weekend before Thanksgiving for more than 25 years.

Hands-on activities during the weekend will be on-going. These will include pottery-making using ancient methods, primitive fire-building and on-site open fire cooking with samples (including our famous popcorn soup). Authentic Native American food displays with sampling; artifacts and tool technology including drilling in stone, face painting with natural pigments, and spear throwing using an atlatl. Films about Native American culture will be shown throughout. Activities are appropriate for all ages. Activities are held both indoors and outdoors.

Participants can also take this opportunity to view the museum's exhibition hall, which explores Long Island Native American culture and archeology, as well as New York State and Long Island geology.

Fee: $8.00 for adults. $5 for children 5-12.
