An 1863 Thanksgiving Holiday Celebration was held at the Old Bethpage Village Restoration on Saturday, November 20th and Sunday, November 21st. This historic landmark gives visitors an exclusive and wonderful opportunity to experience life in a recreated mid-19th-century American village. The 209-acre village includes a variety of homes, farms and businesses.

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano was present to kickoff this historic celebration that allowed visitors to experience what our first official Thanksgiving was like in 1863 when Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a "National Day of Thanksgiving".

At the Williams house, a preserved home from the 19th century, guests watched in amazement as museum staff adorned in attire from this period prepared Cranberry Scones and Turkey using open hearths and beehive ovens found in the homes original kitchen.

We then made our way down to the John M. Layton General Store, which was established in 1866. Once inside guests observed another costumed worker, Beth, as she demonstrated, “stove cooking” with the store’s original 1866 wood-burning stove. Beth demonstrated how to prepare Succotash and an Onion Tart using only what was on hand in this restored building.

The Powell Farm is where we found Laura and Kathleen in the kitchen preparing Mock Cherry Pie, Apple Pie and Pumpkin Pie. The eggs used to create these treats came from some of the 24 chickens that live at Powell Farm. An 1855 wood-burning oven was used to bake these delicious pies. While present day ovens take minutes to preheat, these 19th century wood-burning ovens take approximately four hours!

Aside from the cooking demonstrations, guests were also treated to traditional fiddle music and readings of children’s stories. This event was very interesting and exciting and don’t fret if you missed out because you’ll have another chance to do so this coming
weekend, November 27 - 28.
