The Sweetest Treats In Port Washington Your
olfactory senses come alive with the tantalizingly sweet aromas of freshly prepared
desserts as you enter Main Street Bakery & Café. Sweet temptation awaits you at
this Port Washington favorite that offers a variety of treats from cakes and pies to
cookies and pastries, and of course their famous Main Street candy bar.
At
the helm of this quaint bakery is Chef Michael Mignano, a talented, self-taught
pastry chef whose sweet creations have graced the New York City dining scene
including Balthazar, Aureole and Bouley restaurants as well as Hershey Entertainment
& Resorts in Pennsylvania. Although only open three years and fairly new in the
grand scheme of things, Main Street Bakery has garnered much critical acclaim and
many rave reviews. Intent
on sampling some of the bakeries finest holiday desserts, Michael insisted we taste
their Gateau St. Honore, popular Yule Log, fresh Apple Pie and his one of a kind,
signature layer cake to ring in the New Year. Michael impressed us with his classic Gateau St. Honore - a namesake cake in honor of the French patron saint of bakers and pastry chefs (below left). His presentation was exquisite with a delicate puff pastry, sublime filling and caramel finish.
Meanwhile,
the Yule Log turned out to be the consummate chocolate lovers delight created with
devils food chocolate cake, a chocolate mousse center and enrobed in chocolate
ganache (above right). Artistically crafted to resemble a quintessential Yule log,
the cake was ideally moist and offered as much of an intense chocolate flavor
possible, without being too overpowering on your palate. If you like a really fresh, homemade apple pie, this ones for you (below left)! From the advent of Fall and all through the holidays, nothing is as heartwarming as a good apple pie. Michael’s apple pie is as traditional as they come with a fine crust and an honest filling that’s not too sweet.
When
asked for something that would represent the New Year, Michael presented us with his
one of a kind, signature layer cake consisting of alternating layers of vanilla
cake, salted peanut caramel, peanut butter mousse, buttered popcorn with marshmallow
and chocolate mousse (above right). This elegantly decadent dessert had flavors that
married nicely with a salted peanut caramel finish that proved to be the candy
surprise of the New Year!
