Long Island's Indian Spice Rave

If you're looking to add some spice to your life, or just looking for some tasty, traditional Indian cuisine, we suggest heading to Royal Bukhara Grill in Hicksville. There is lots of competition with other Indian restaurants in the area but the diligent staff at Royal Bukhara Grill work hard to make their restaurant stand out.

The restaurant has exclusive parking in the front of their building off of Broadway with additional parking shared by surrounding establishments easily accessed via Jerusalem Avenue. Upon entering, you are greeted by a glass wall separating the entrance hall and dining room, which has been decorated with an ornate orange Hindi design. As you walk into the restaurant, you will first notice the dark wooded bar accented by the hanging lamps above. The walls of the dining room are beige and deep red with authentic pieces of Indian art.

Authentic Indian music played in the background as we absorbed the natural ambiance of our surroundings. As we were seated we were given their unique, extensive menu, interestingly presented on a wooden board. As we perused the menu we were informed that the spiciness of the dishes can be adjusted at your request. If you'd like something that isn't on the menu, mention it and if they have it in the kitchen the chef is happy to prepare it for you, including Halal style cuisine.

While we waited for our food to arrive we munched on a basket of Papas, which could best be described as a crispy tortilla (below left). It's prepared by mixing flour, lentils and salt together then baked in the tandoor oven. It was pleasantly thin and wonderfully tasty with the supplied sauces.

We were also given a Breadbasket featuring a combination of three house favorite breads (Naan, Onion Kulcha and Parantha - above right). These freshly baked breads are prepared in a clay oven and we were also treated to some Garlic Naan, which was our absolute favorite.

Our first dish was the Adrak Ki Chaamp - lamb chops marinated in fresh ginger and garlic (below left). These chops are an all time favorite amongst customers and with one bite we could surely see why. They were tender, succulent and full of flavor.

The Lollipop Chicken is a great dish to share (above right). The crispy, tangy chicken wings are lollipop shaped and tossed in a garlic sauce. Served in lettuce cups, they make a great finger food and are a little spicier than the lamb, but not too overpowering.

We continued with the Handi Goat, which presents tender pieces of lamb with spices and basmati rice (below left). Served with a side of yogurt sauce, the meat was impressively tender and the long grained basmati rice was cooked to perfection.

The Mixed Non-Vegetable Grill consists of Malai Kabab, Hiryali Tikka, Aatish Kabab and Tandoori Chicken (above right). The Malai Kabab is boneless chicken breast seasoned with an array of herbs and spices. The Hiryali Tikka is boneless morsels of chicken marinated in yogurt and spices. The Aatish Kabab is chicken pieces marianted in a pickle seasoning enough to tickle your palace and last, but certainly not least, the Tandoori Chicken is chicken marinated with yogurt and spices. Each variety of chicken was flavorsome and prepared nicely, however, the Tandoori Chicken was our ultimate favorite.

Next up were the Vegetable Hakkai Noodles which you will not find on the regular menu, but are a popular lunch buffet item (below left). The noodles are soft and the fresh vegetables carry a hint of heat. It's an excellent vegetarian option on their menu.

The Amritsari Fish is a mouthwatering fish prepared with garlic and an array of herbs (above right). The tilapia fish was clearly fresh with a crisp exterior and tender interior. It was nicely battered and was served atop a bed of lettuce with assorted vegetables.

Chicken Makhani is unquestionably the most versatile delicacy in Northern India and Royal Bukhara Grill surely does the dish justice (below left). The tender chicken pieces are roasted in a clay oven and then tossed in a creamy tomato sauce. The entree is cleverly presented in a metal bowl and was one of our favorite entrees of the evening.

We ended our meal with the Dal Bukhara - a harmonious combination of black lentils cooked over a slow fire (above right). Served with a side of basmati rice, this dish was very smooth and complimented the bread well.

Royal Bukhara Grill has perfected blending and rationing spices for each of their dishes. Their menu is quite extensive and includes a large variety of items. You will definitely be returning to try different dishes. They offer a lavish, 18 course lunch buffet Monday - Friday from 12-3PM for $10.95 (includes a glass of wine or soda) and also on Saturday and Sunday from 12-3PM for $11.95 (includes a glass of wine or soda). This standout Indian restaurant would be our recommendation to add some spice to your life!
