An Authentic Taste of Japan in Jericho Conveniently located near the intersection of Jericho Turnpike, Brush Hollow Road and Exit 40 of the LIE, Genji offers guests an easy to find location that serves up a wide selection of Sushi, traditional cooked Japanese cuisine as well as many innovative unique dishes only found at this establishment.
What makes Genji truly unique is its size and selection of food – in many ways Genji is like several restaurants in one. As a matter of fact, you can visit Genji several times in a given week and enjoy a different dining experience each time. Everything from an authentic Hibachi “family style” service, complete with food cooked at your table with a little entertainment from the chef to the intimacy of a cosmopolitan style Sushi bar. In addition, Genji provides a contemporary open air dinning area that even when completely full allows for comfortable conversation among table guests. For those looking for a little light fun with their food, on certain nights Genji offers complimentary Karaoke on its second floor dinning area. Genji has it all – including private rooms that are great for personal and business events.
Genji offers a very wide selection of Japanese cuisine including special chef rolls and dishes that are not on the menu and may only be available depending on the time of year. So, of course you will find Sushi, Sashimi, Teriyaki and Hibachi dishes, but Genji also offers several types of comfort foods such as Udon soups traditionally served with noodles and various meats, seafood and vegetables as well as Donburi (above left) which is a more rustic dish served over rice and often is a blend of an egg omelet, meat or fish, and vegetables. A noteworthy dish was the Shumai (above right); a traditional shrimp dumpling that we thought was exceptional.
For appetizers, the menu offers many traditional dishes as well as an interesting BBQ Calamari that has a tangy ginger flavor and an oven Roasted Chilean Sea Bass that is prepared with a special Miso sauce. However, a must try is the Avocado Koroke (above left) – it is a wonderful blending of avocado and potato that is formed into a dumpling, breaded in Asian style Panko bread crumbs and then deep fried – the buttery filling surrounded by the tasty crisp shell is a great way to startup your appetite. Also on the appetizer menu is a White Tuna Dengaku (above right) that is comprised of seared white tuna prepared with Ponzu (citrus) sauce served over a lightly dressed assortment of field greens accompanied by slices of Fresh Mango. This cool crisp dish could easily double as a great light lunch, but why stop there.
In regards to main dishes there are plenty to choose from that also include house combination specials that provide a mix of fish and meats as well as hot and cold items. Starting with soup and salads the Miso Lobster Soup (above right) will delight the seafood lover with a decisively Asian twist. Served within a solid base of Miso soup are ample amounts of real lobster meat, Shitake and Enoki mushrooms (petite white mushrooms with long stems) as well as other vegetables. And if you like it more on the spicy side, the Spicy Kani Salad (above left) is a great mix of chopped Crab, Radish, Cucumber and Lettuce all dressed with a spicy Asian style vinaigrette. Moving on to Sushi, Genji offers all the traditional favorites as well as more than a dozen special rolls. Included in the special category is the Caribbean Mango Roll. This roll provides an unexpected combination of Yellowtail Tuna, Cucumber, Avocado with fresh Mango and a lingering hint of Raspberry. This roll delights with a sweet, but not overpowering, taste of fruit that only serves to emphasize the flavors of the more traditional ingredients.
Also recommended, the Calamari Tempura Roll
(above right) that will impress with its substantial grouping of traditional ingredients all wrapped within a pink outer layer. The combination of Tempura fried Calamari mixed with the Cucumber, Avocado, tobico flakes all lightly drizzled with a sweet and salty sauce provides a wonderful taste experience that will soon become one of your favorites.
